Aggie Family Fun Night

Just a couple pictures from the annual Aggie Family Fun Night at Fireman's Park each August right before school starts. On a side note, we usually go, but this year we thought about skipping out on it. We did not even tell the kids it was coming up, BUT it appears Mallory is already making plans while at school. When she got picked up that day she proceeded to tell Ryan that we were going that night and that her, Max and Miles would be there. After talking to the other moms that night it appears our trio made plans at school together and so it starts already. My mind wants to cringe at the thought of her in her teenage years. We did however enjoy our evening at the park with the Felders, Rankin's, Siemsglusz's and fellow Aggies. Mallory and Max were pretty much inseparable.

Fishing in Shelby

The kids love to fish in Shelby so one Saturday evening in August we took them out for a couple of hours and then enjoyed supper out their as well.

Big Girl Bed

In August we decided that it was waaay past time to move Mallory from her toddler bed to a real bed. After all, she was almost five and has literally spent her lifetime sleeping on a crib mattress that was 8 years old because Dalton used it first. Her furniture transitioned to a full and we were concerned that this would give her no room to 'play' so that's when the hunt started. We spent some time looking, talking, thinking, agonizing, shopping and then nothing. I was thinking a daybed with trundle would be perfect. It would still give her room to play and would allow for a sleepover, but unfortunately we could not agree on furniture. The last time we walked into Rooms To Go we were planning to purchase something, but we ended up walking out with nothing and headed home to re-group.

While in the store all of us kept going back to a 'full' size bedroom set which we already had at home. After some measuring we decided to keep the furniture we already had and convert the bed to a full size. A few hours later and furniture moved around to fit in her room Mallory broke down. She absolutely hated it! Why you ask? Exactly what we thought...the bed was TOO BIG! It was a drastric change from her little crib mattress plus it left her noooo room to actually play in her room.

So, we had just bought a twin mattress because that is what we originally thought we were going to do and then we bought a full when we decided to keep her furniture, now what were we going to do with all this furniture? Well to keep this story short, the kids switched bedroom furniture. Dalton wanted the full size bed and Mallory wanted his twin size. So, in the same day Ryan and I took both beds apart. Moved all the furniture and swapped rooms. I think it would have been easier to just move their closets!! The kids were excited to have their new rooms and we were excited to have it finished or at least temporarily while we tested the waters before we made another big investment. To date they are both still sleeping all night in their rooms and are loving it.

I just realized in trying to update this blog that I never took any of the final room pics as I only have a couple from the original night. I'll have to get those and update the post at a later date.

CCA Fishing Tournament

We picked Dalton up early from camp so he could go with us to Port O'Conner for the annual CCA fishing tournament. We let Dalton fish with us this year for another one of his 1st's. We also enjoyed the company from Uncle Randy and Megan. It was Megan's 1st fishing trip to the coast and I think we successfully got her hooked. Overall it was a fabulous weekend, no big wins, but lots and lots of laughs and memories that will last forever.

Dalton's 1st Overnight Camp - Lutherhill

Back in the Spring Lutherhill came to Salem soliciting participation for their summer camp program. Lutherhill had come to Salem for VBS the prior summer and was scheduled to return this summer. After asking a few times Dalton decided he wanted to go to summer camp with Lawson Swor a friend of his. Hesitantly I filled out the application and sent in the money. Dalton had never stayed anywhere without us and for more than a night except for the g-parents so this was a BIG deal. It was one of those FIRST moments in his life.

As the days approached his mood changed and he no longer wanted to go...uh oh! Thankfully we were able to talk to him, show him pictures of other camps and calmed his nerves. On Sunday, July 27 we loaded up and headed to Camp Lutherhill. Unknown to us when we registered was that several boys from Washington County were also attending camp the same week and they just happened to be bunk mates in Cabin 9 (Heaven Is For Real). It certainly helped having friends and making new friends. When I picked him up early on Thursday afternoon he was not ready to leave which made my heart smile. I knew he had had fun. I tried to capture the day's lessons and activities below so he could look back on them when he's older.

Monday - Hello my name is...Never Alone
On Monday they learned about how God, Immanuel, chose to live among us. The Bible study focused on Matthew 1:18-25. In that passage, the angel of the Lord reassured Joseph to take the pregnant Mary as his wife and to name their child, Immanuel. The name Immanuel means God with us and inspired Monday's theme, Hello my name is...Never Alone. For breakfast they ate pancakes, bacon, hashbrowns and fruit. For lunch they enjoyed soup frito pie, veggie fries and a salad and for supper they pasta w/meat sauce, green beans and more fruit. Cabin 9's activities for the afternoon included canteen/games, arts and crafts and the pond (one of Dalton's favorites).

Tuesday - Hello my name is...Beloved
On Tuesday they learned that the theme for the day could be seen in the movie Toy Story. Woody is Andy's favorite toy. He has been marked with Andy's name on the bottom of his boot and Andy knows Woody inside and out. In the story for Tuesday, God marks his son Jesus through the act of baptism. They learned that when Jesus emerges from the water on the Jordon River a dove descended on Him. God then claimed Jesus when He said "This is my son whom I love; with him I am well pleased." And so just like Andy claims Woody and God claims Jesus, the children learned that they are also marked and claimed as beloved children of God. For breakfast the enjoyed eggs, biscuits and gravy, hashbrown casserole and pears. For lunch they enjoyed mac and cheese, fish, and corn and for supper they had ham, scalloped potatoes, roasted carrots and a salad. Cabin 9's activities for the afternoon included archery, pool and baking w/Geoff.

Wednesday
On Wednesday they explored John 6:3-14, the feeding of 5000. This story in the gospel of John is about a boy with 5 small barley loaves and 2 small fish. He offers up his gifts for Jesus to bless and multiple for others to enjoy. In the story they learned that God entrusts each of us with unique gifts so we can share them for the common good. Campers also learned about water conservation and pollution through Lutherhill's Daily Bread Project. This was the 5th summer for Lutherhill to do the Daily Bread Project. The children learned that they are blessed with clean, refreshing water every day that can be accessed from the tap, but many around the world don't have access to this blessing. Campers assembled personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief to be sent around the world. The kits will go to people after man-made and natural disasters as a sign of God's love. For breakfast they had breakfast burritos and fruit. For lunch they enjoyed pizza, hot wings, chees sticks, celery sticks, salad and ice cream. For supper they had chicken fingers, mashed potatoes and peas and carrots. Cabin 9's activities for the afternoon included baking, pond and yoga.

Thursday - Hello my name is...Community
Thursday was the last full day at camp and they talked about community. In Paul's letter to the Corinthians (chapter 11 verses 17-26) he looked back at Christ bringing us into community through Holy Communion. The campers learned that Christ blessed the bread and wine during the Last Supper for all of us and that we are all gathered into one community through this blessing. For breakfast they had french toast, sausage links and potato pancakes. For lunch they had tomato soup, grilled cheese, fruit and salad. For supper they had burgers, baked beans, corn and ice cream. Cabin 9's afternoon activities were daily bread, pool and games/canteen.

Friday - Hello my name is...Love
Dalton was not at camp on Friday but they wrapped up the camp for the week the campers were sent out into the world proclaiming Christ's love. In John 13:1-5, 12-17, Jesus puts his love into an action, not just an emotion. After the Last Supper, Jesus washes his disciples' feet. As feet were even more gross back then, before the day of closed-toe shoes. This was no clean or easy job. It was an act of love. Lutherhill staff sent the campers out into their own communities with the love they experienced at camp to share back home. They enjoyed pigs in a blanket, muffins and peaches for breakfast and had soup, chicken puck sandwiches and applesauce for lunch.

Day 9 - Homeward Bound

On Saturday, July 19 we got up at 7:00 AM and were in the car and on the road by 8:00 AM. Thankfully it was raining, I mean pouring so it made leaving a little easier. According to the radar it showed we would have rain all the way til Mobile, AL and we certainly did. It was a slow drive. We crossed the Alabama state line at 10:24 AM with mileage of 121.4. We stopped in Grand Bay, AL at noon for lunch at Hardee's, potty and gas. We were back on the road at 12:50 PM. We were in Mississippi at 12:52 PM and in Louisiana by 1:52 PM with a mileage of 267.6. We had a potty and gas stop at 4:45 PM in Iowa, LA and were back on the road at 4:54 PM. We entered Texas at 5:29 PM with mileage of 518. We hit the 290 de-tours in Houston and was in Washington County by 8:01 PM. We stopped at Sonic in Brenham to grab supper and headed home. We were home by 8:40 PM with mileage of 718.5. Not a bad trip given traffic, rain and road de-tours.

Day 8 - Bay Fishing

Day 8, our last day in Florida and it was our earliest morning. You would think we would have planned this better but before we ever left Texas we had decided to charter a fishing trip and this was the only day open when we booked. Of all the things we had done and seen the past three years while at the beach in Florida fishing was not one of them and it was something Daddy had always wanted to do. So on Friday, July 18 we HAD to set alarms. We got up at 4:30 AM and headed out fishing in St. Andrew's Bay. We chartered a private fishing trip with Captain Steve of Blessed Moon Charters. We left the condo at 5:15 AM and made it to the marina by 5:45 AM. We were on the water by 6:00 AM for a half day of fishing. It was a slow morning. Dalton caught most of the fish. We brought home trout, flounder and Spanish Mackerel.

We grabbed a quick bite for lunch at Chick-fil-A and then headed back to the condo so we could spend our last afternoon on the beach. The water temperature was cool due in part by cloudy skies. The water was so clear we could see forever by walking out. We probably went out 200 yards or more and could clearly see our feet. That was the same while fishing. You could clearly see the bay bottom and watch the fish swim around. We picked up lots of shells with the clear water. We left the beach at 5:00 PM and headed to the pools. The kids really did not play in the water park at all this year like in years past. Maybe we have finally out grown it. After an hour or so we headed up to the room to clean up and start packing. We ate all our leftovers in the fridge for supper and had everything packed and the vehicle loaded by 10:00 PM and were off to bed.
